Alf has been the lollipop man outside Harrow Lodge Primary School for 24 years and now he is facing redundancy. Staff and parents were upset to discover that redundancies were being made for lollipop people across Havering and that Alf could be one.

Alf told the Havering Daily: “I don’t care what the council say, I will keep doing my job even if I’m not paid. I don’t do it for the council, I do it for the children and their parents. It’s seeing the children and their happy smiling faces that makes my day.

“I’ve being doing this job for 24 years and I’ve watched children grow up and have their own children,” says Alf who is nearly 90 years old.

Alf was invited to the schools Easter Parade yesterday where a special assembly was held and he was handed over a card and gifts to thank him for his incredible dedication to the school and its pupils.

As he did his job for possibly the last time yesterday, endless parents and children came up to hug Alf and thank him. He will sorely be missed by a whole community, Alf really is a local legend!
