On the 1st of February 2024, Robert Dean signed up for a challenge to run 100km in February in order to help raise funds for Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity.

Robert is not only a much loved member of our community, but also a community hero who is always walking, running or helping others in need. Despite not having done any running since his school days, Robert wanted to help children and give them a better future.

He ran a minimum of 3.5km running every evening in February to reach the 100km!

His aim was to help provide a better future for seriously ill children around the UK and to make a difference to children treated at Great Ormond Street Hospital, also supporting their parents.

Robert told the Havering Daily:

“This amazing charity raises funds each year for redevelopment, purchases up-to-date equipment, provides accommodation for families, staff and much more. The new bespoke clinical centre at Great Ormond Street Hospital will include cancer wards, cancer day care, new theatres and intensive care units for children.

If you wish to donate please select the link below which will divert you to my fundraising page for Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity, thankyou.”

  • Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, was founded on 14 February 1852.
  • Despite opening with just 10 beds, it grew into one of the world’s leading children’s hospitals through the patronage of Queen Victoria.
  • Charles Dickens, was one of its first fundraisers.
  • The Nurses League was formed in February 1937.
  • Great Ormond Street Hospital was nationalised in 1948.
  • Diana, Princess of Wales, served as president of the hospital from 1989 until her death.
  • The hospital has relied on charitable support since it first opened.
(The NHS meets the day-to-day running costs of the hospital but the fundraising income allows Great Ormond Street Hospital to remain at the forefront of child healthcare)
