Local community groups will join forces to show the joy of numbers in the centre of Romford.

On 22nd February, local community groups will join forces to show the joy of numbers in the centre of Romford at Havering’s first ‘Number Fayre’.

Part of the Mayor’s ‘London Multiply Roadshow’, Dicing With Life Board game Club, Kaleidoscope LGBTQIA+ Youth Group and The NO Collective will be hosting FREE arts and gaming activities for families to build  their number skills together, alongside Havering Adult College who can advise on how to upskill and find free courses.

The Number Fayre plans to show people in Havering that numbers can be enjoyable, with lots of fun ways to understand and use maths in everyday creative activities. The Fayre will be at The Mercury Shopping Centre on 22nd February between 11am – 3pm and is free to attend. Activities on the day will include using 3D shapes to create a kaleidoscope from scratch, using geometry to draw giant traditional patterns and using your number and probability skills to play strategy and fairground games (with prizes!). You will also be able to meet representatives of Havering Adult College who will be on hand to advise on what courses are right for you.

Natalie, The Managing Director of The NO Collective (arts organisation) says:

“Numbers are part of everything we see and do. We use them whether we are measuring the space for a picture on your wall, seeing if we have enough change for parking, or working out how long we have until we need to catch a bus. By playing games, drawing, making and having fun together; we can become more confident in mastering the skills we need to make every day numeracy less daunting.”

This event is part of the Mayor’s London Multiply Roadshow which is delivering a series of free family-friendly numeracy events and fun activities in local areas across the city to help Londoners build their confidence with numbers and connect them with local learning opportunities, including his London Multiply programme.

In addition to the Havering Number Fayre, DWL, Kaleidoscope and The NO Collective are also delighted announce that they are part of the roadshow’s flagship event which will take place in Tobacco Dock in Tower Hamlets on Saturday 2ndMarch. Providing more Londoners with the opportunity to build their skills and confidence with numbers. A big team of creatives will be playing more games, including a giant ‘Higher or Lower’ and building a community light sculpture together out of a huge Geodesic dome!

Deputy Mayor for Planning, Regeneration and Skills, Jule Pipe said:

“By running fun, family-friendly events like this across the city, we want Londoners to gain the essential skills they need to lead happier, healthier lives.”

Low confidence with numbers can impact the day-to-day lives of so many of us. It is estimated that 58 per cent of Londoners have low numeracy skills. This can impact on the ability to understand financial documents, including pay slips and bills, and work out discounts to help with budgeting It could also impact on earnings overall[1].

If you are feeling nervous around numbers, want to upskill for work or dread helping your children with their maths homework, make sure you stop by to one of these events.

With the right support, anyone, at any age, can become confident and happy with numbers.
