A man running a logistics and delivery firm has slammed the ultra low emission expansion for the closure of his business and now having to declare himself bankrupt.

Carlos who lives in Hornchurch had numerous vans and had spent many years building up his own business. Now, he has had to declare himself bankrupt and finds himself with endless fines.

“The scrappage scheme would give me £5K for my vans, some cost me nearly £10K. I was receiving nearly twelve fines a week, I couldn’t keep up with any payments. I was forced to close my business and still the fines keep coming through my letterbox.”

Carlos tells us that he can not afford to pay any of the fines and has very little left now in the way of finance.

“I just do not have the money anymore. Everyone wants something. I had no choice but to declare myself bankrupt. I have endless fines and I’m not going to pay them as I can’t.

“When the introduction of the ULEZ was first put out, I knew it was going to have a toll on my business, but I did not realise that it would actually mean the end. I have been living in Hornchurch and working in London for many years now, but now I can’t afford to stay here any further and am going to go back to Portugal.

“I have enjoyed my time in London and would have liked to carry on working here, but I can’t afford to stay here any longer. I am still getting endless fines through the door when all I wanted to do was keep my business going.”

Carlos has resigned himself that his only way is to now return to Portugal and start working there as London is not an option for him anymore.

“I have really enjoyed working here and running a business here. But with ULEZ, so many businesses are now closing down, especially the smaller businesses like many. We have no choice but to close them down.”
