Sam Holland, Conservative Candidate for Dagenham and Rainham has written to Havering Council Leader Ray Morgon asking for clarity on what progress is being made in regards to the Launders Lane fires.Mr Holland has asked Councillor Ray Morgon to outline the next steps to prevent another summer of fires at Launders Lane.

His letter to Havering Council is featured below:

Dear Cllr Morgon

I am writing following recent communication I’ve had with residents in Rainham about the proposed next steps for Arnolds Field, Launders Lane. The public meeting on 24th November 2023 was welcome as was Havering Council’s subsequent email update outlining the environmental testing results in summary. The report from that testing featured several recommendations for mitigating risks, these were:

  • Preventing unauthorised access to the site, which will reduce any external influences which may be contributing to the fires, adding additional contaminants and disturbing existing material.
  • Further consideration and assessment of ground gases (including methane) to reduce this as a potential source which could exacerbate and fuel fires.
  • Capping the landfill site, which will reduce the risk of hazardous materials and fibres being released into the atmosphere.
  • Continuing to monitor the site for airborne fibres to reduce health risks.

I share the concern of many residents that should no progress be made on implementing any of the risk mitigation measures soon, there is risk of another summer featuring a repeat of all the same issues faced by residents previously.

If you could outline publicly what steps Havering Council intends to take and when to ensure timely implementation of the risk mitigation recommendations that would be greatly welcomed by many across the community of Rainham, Wennington and South Hornchurch.

I look forward to your response – I am placing a copy of this letter in the public domain.

Yours sincerely

Sam Holland

This chap, who happens to be a “serving” councillor in Bicester Oxfordshire, should let us know what he thinks of the landowners plans to develop part of the site. He should also explain why his Tory chums who were in control of Havering Council for decades when these problems began did absolutely nothing to deal with the issue, indeed it looks like they turned a blind eye to what was going on at Arnolds Field.
He writes to the current Council leader on what he is doing, well to be fair they are getting to grips with the problem and working to get a solution – he should think on that and ask his Tory chums who sat on havering Council why they did absolutely zero.
