Chief Nurse Kathryn Halford congratulates Taylor and Paul on the birth of their baby.

A baby that was so eager to be born was delivered on a bench in the carpark of Queen’s Hospital last Sunday 7 January.

Taylor Thacker, 27, waters broke on Sunday so fiancé Paul Clarke, 33, and her mum rushed to the Romford hospital from their home in Elizabeth Road, Rainham, but the baby wasn’t hanging around.

Karen Hayward, 54, had to deliver her daughter’s baby there-and-than on a bench just outside the hospital and she did so successfully bringing Elsie-Jay into the world. Paul cut the umbilical cord. Elsie-Jay was born healthy weighing in at 6lb3 at 5.45pm and makes an amazing addition to Ivy-Lea, three, and Freddie, who is one on Wednesday. It took 40 minutes from door to door before she was born.

Taylor said: “My little drama queen had to make a grand entrance somehow and thank you mum for delivering my baby.”

Visitors flocked to the hospital with “IT’S A GIRL” balloons and gifts including fruit and magazines to see Elsie-Jay including aunt Leanne Hayward and grandmother Carol Clarke.

Dad Paul, said: “The midwives were shocked and it was the talk of the ward. It’s not everyday a baby is born in the carpark,”

Taylor also said: “I’d like to thank the passers-by who got me a hospital gown and helped me into a wheelchair.”

The couple, who have been together for seven years, want more children and hope to make a five-a-side football team. Paul wants Elsie-Jay to be a massive Hammer’s fan. Ivy-Lea is looking to take her younger sister shopping at the Brewery when she’s older to buy handbags.

BHRUT Chief Nurse Kathryn Halford told the Havering Daily:

“While our midwives are always on hand to support women as they give birth, as in this case, sometimes baby is just too eager to make it to our labour ward! I’m glad Elsie-Jay was delivered safely and mum and baby are doing well.”
