Dagenham and Rainham MP and Labour Prospective Parliamentary Candidate tackle flooding issues at Central Park in Dagenham.

Jon Cruddas MP and Margaret Mullane, Labour’s PPC for Dagenham and Rainham, have been contacted by users of Central Park in Dagenham regarding localised flooding and muddy paths across sections of the park caused by the ongoing groundworks.

Jon and Margaret took the issue up with Barking and Dagenham Council and have now received assurances that until the works are completed the contractor will continue to inspect the paths and remove mud where it is practical to do so.

Jon told the Havering Daily: “We have been informed that the new sections of footpath are temporarily contributing to the current problemas they form artificial channels for the water. However, once the new footpaths are surfaced and completed this should resolve the problem. Several areas have been created as part of the master plan works, that are designed to catch and store water temporarily and allow it to drain away naturally. This should help prevent flooding that has affected areas in Heath Ward.”

Margaret commented: “At present the mounds that have been created as part of plans for Central Park are a source of problems. The reply we have received from the Council statesas the mounds settle, and grass cover is established the problem with mud will subside and more surface water run-off will be naturally intercepted so there will be a reduced likelihood of ‘ponding’ and waterlogging. 

I was pleased to see that consideration is being given toadditional tree planting in the area to remove excess water from the soil. We also need to make sure the contractor does check on the state of the footpaths and clears up muddy deposits in the meantime.”
