History was made in Havering this December when the first ever Menorah was lit outside of Havering Town Hall. A special ceremony was held to mark this occasion that saw the lighting of the Menorah to celebrate Chanukah. Its installment had caused earlier controversy when Havering Council had previously chosen to retract the allowing of the Menorah in fear of repercussions following the ongoing war in Gaza. Council staff were then informed that lighting a Menorah for Chanukah, was a religious celebration that had been going on for over two thousand years. It was also noted that London prides itself in the embracing of diversity of all Faiths and cultures.

On December 12, at 7pm Havering Town Hall was lit up with its first ever Menorah shinning bright across the evening sky. Hundreds came to witness this historic moment.

Since October 7, London has seen a 1,350% increase in anti semitic attacks. It is believed over 50 incidents are taking place across the capital each day. From assaults on Jewish community members to attacks on Jewish schools, graffiti sprayed on Jewish shops and fear being felt right across all Jewish communities in London.

In Havering, the lighting of the Menorah was seen as a sign of peace and hope for all. Hundreds of members of the community from east London right through to Essex came to join in the Chanukah celebrations. Local MPs, Council leaders, and Havering’s Mayor came to witness the first ever Menorah being installed outside the Town Hall.

The Menorah is a sign of peace and Romford Rabbi Lee is the first to work with all members of the community and stand strong together. He is known right across the capital as man who works with all, who embraces all and encourages all communities to be united. He is often found at all council events supporting every member of the community and encourages people to stand together and support each other.
