‘We are fortunate in this country to be free to worship the Faith we choose- I am so glad all turned out well for the Jewish Community in Romford.’
St Albans Ward Councillor Holt joins historic lighting of Havering’s first Menorah.
Councillor Judith Holt was delighted to be able to join the celebrations for the blessing of the menorah outside Havering Town Hall last Tuesday evening 12th December. This was something which seemed impossible a few weeks ago, but pressure from Rabbi Lee Sunderland, Rabbi Aryeh Sufrin, the Jewish community, local representatives and the general public forced the leaders of Havering Council into a U-turn over their decision to stop the ceremony.
The St. Alban’s Ward Councillor joined the large crowd which had assembled before the two menorahs fixed outside the Town Hall, eager and ready to hear the speeches of Rabbi Sufrin, Rabbi Sunderland and other local community leaders, including The Mayor of Havering Councillor Stephanie Nunn and Andrew Rosindell M.P. for Romford. There was much joyful clapping and singing before the lighting of the candles of both menorahs.
“This was all about freedom of worship – if you listen to Andrew Rosindell M.P. speaking, he sums it up perfectly,” said Councillor Holt. “We are so fortunate in this country to be free to worship in the faith we choose and those in authority should respect that. I am so glad all turned out well for the Jewish Community in Romford.”
