Hornchurch mother starts petition in a desperate bid to save transport for disabled children and young people in Havering.

Ruth Kettle-Frisby has launched a petition calling on Cabinet Member for Education Councillor Oscar Ford and Havering Council Leader Councillor Ray Morgon, to stop the cuts to school transport for disabled children and young people in Havering.

Today she writes:

My daughter and children like her in the borough depend on our local authority school transport provision. Her escorts – Lee and Gill – provide outstanding care. They know her well, and they love and understand her. They are honestly worth their weight in gold and we appreciate them every school day.

I do sympathise with the Council’s situation as they face bankruptcy, but it’s never the answer to target necessary services for disabled children to get them to school safely.

It’s hard enough for parents to let go of their children into the care of educational institutions in the first place, and when your child is disabled, the level of trust required is even higher.

These cuts are targeting people who cannot fight their corner, so the task falls to parents and carers – who are already stretched to their limits – while saving the government considerable costs by giving their children the best possible care.

Our disabled children and young people are already disadvantaged. At the very least they need and deserve robust, purpose-built, joined-up systems of care with high levels of accountability.

We won’t stop until the Council treat our children and young people with the respect and dignity they deserve by protecting their right to suitable school transport provision.
