Members of the Tunnel Angling Club in Rainham have been using Ellis Lake on Launders Lane for over fifty years. The club has over 150 members, many of whom are pensioners and disabled.

Now, they have been told that their fishing licence will not be renewed and as such, the club cannot use the lake they have used for so many years.

Jim, a member of the Tunnel Angling Club, told the Havering Daily:

“We are very disappointed by this. We have been using this lake for over fifty years and the fishing club is such a big part of our lives. Many of our members are disabled and we help each other here, get to the lake, set up their equipment.

“It is a fantastic local club, we are a community and really look after this lake. By now, I should be sweeping up leaves and other such things to keep the area clean and tidy. Instead now we are looking to pack up all our equipment and leave as our licence runs our in May next year.”

The Rainham club is a real community club, it makes next to no profit as its aims are to help locals wanting to use the lake and spend time outdoors.

“We all help each other here. It is a club where we support each other. A real community club.

“Now that our licence has not been renewed we are all very upset, members really are gutted by this decision.”

Local clubs such as these are often a vital part of our community for so many people. They provide many friendships and outdoor activities for many who might not have had the opportunity otherwise.
