Irony as endless amounts of officers used to police protests across London as activists ask ‘when are you going to investigate real criminals’.
Two people were arrested yesterday, on suspicion of criminal damage at the Natural History Museum. The Just Stop Oil activists vandalised one of the exhibits with cornstarch and are currently in police custody.
The group of activists are once again on the London streets with orange paint targeting a variety of London hotspots.
The majority of the public agree with the environmental issues here and their urgency. What they do not agree with and are now extremely hostile towards, is the manner the protesting is happening across our capital.
It is interesting to note here, that as the Metropolitan Police tweeted news about the arrest of the two protesters yesterday for spraying exhibits at the Natural History Museum, the response from Just Stop Oil was ‘PS When are are you investigating the real criminals?’
The comment was indeed very ironic. If we refer back to the summer, Assistant Commissioner Matt Twist informed Londoners that this group of protesters had cost the police more than £7.7 million in policing in thirteen weeks of protests.
Officers from already stretched BCU’s had been called up to cover the slow marches and other protests by this group. Endless officers had been used from right across the capital to cover their protests. Officers who should be on our streets, safer Neighbourhood teams, or working in our boroughs tackling ‘real criminals’ as they state.
Yet again, these officers will be called to cover these protests today and across the next few months and will not be ‘investigating real criminals’ as they are obliged to arrest paint sprayers and deal with irate members of the public as a result.
Environmental issues impacting the planet are vast, I’m sure most of the London community will agree. However, asking officers to investigate real criminals when you are the direct cause of thousands of officers having to leave their role to patrol your protests, is some what ironic at the very least.
