‘A step in the right direction’-Havering Friends of the Earth welcome changes to borough’s recycling and refuse collection.
Yesterday, Monday 23 October saw Havering’s new refuse and recycling service under new contractors Urbaser, begin.
Members of Havering Friends of the Earth today, share their views on this new service in the Havering Daily.
Havering Friends of the Earth is delighted to welcome the changes and improvements to the borough’s recycling and rubbish collection service.
Havering Friends of the Earth has been campaigning for several years to widen the plastic collection going into the orange sacks. This is now going to become a reality with plastic packaging being added to the plastic bottle collection. Many Havering residents feel very strongly that supermarkets use too much plastic packaging and that it can’t be recycled. More recycling is a tremendous step forward and will reduce waste and save resources.
The additional items of coffee pods, textiles and small appliances to be collected is an excellent initiative. Aluminium from coffee pods can be recycled almost indefinitely, and coffee grounds can be used for compost!
While we are pleased to learn that glass will be part of the new rubbish collection regime, many people have spoken to us with concerns about safety for the operatives picking up possible broken items in the orange sacks and suffering an injury. We have always wanted a doorstep glass collection service, particularly for the elderly and disabled, but in other local authorities the bottles and jars are put into plastic crates.
Gerpins Lane tip is a well-used and well managed site. The operatives are helpful and it is made easy for those visiting the tip to dispose of their rubbish carefully. We hope this will continue with the new contractor.
However, we feel sure that the new system on the doorstep will be a bonus for residents and will help to cut down the enormous levels of rubbish going to landfill. This will save the council money and even more importantly, will benefit the planet.
