Conservative Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Dagenham and Rainham Sam Holland today writes:

Last week the Prime Minister announced major changes to the Government’s plan on getting to Net Zero Carbon emissions. The debate about climate change is stuck between two extremes: those who want to deny climate change or abandon Net Zero altogether because the costs are too high, and those who want to go further and faster with no regard to the cost to people’s lives or how much our country has already achieved compared to others. We need to change this debate – and forge a credible path to reach Net Zero by 2050 that brings people with us and is properly transparent about the choices involved.

The new approach includes a delay on the ban to sell new petrol and diesel cars until 2035, a loosening of the 2035 phase-out of selling new gas boilers and landlords will no longer be forced to insulate their rental properties by Government. We care about the environment, but we also care about working people keeping more of what they earn.

Why does all this matter and what does it mean for the people of Dagenham and Rainham?

These changes come following an analysis of the cost impact on ordinary working people and families. As Conservatives, we do not believe in making working people shoulder even more costs to hit high-level internationally agreed targets. This principle goes together with what we’re campaigning for here in Dagenham and Rainham. The removal of the Mayor’s ULEZ Driver’s tax, wanting better value for money fortaxpayers by reducing council tax at both Barking and Dagenham and Havering Council, removing high-cost parking charges and Controlled Parking Zones where they aren’t wanted, pledging more value for money in tackling crime through smart investments in Policing and cleaner and tidier streets.

In contrast to our plan to put working people’s finances at the front and centre of climate and energy policy, Labour don’t have a credible plan. They’re just taking short-term positions to suit them politically.

They want to borrow £28 billion a year to spend on the climate transition but haven’t said how they’ll spend it. Borrowing this amount every year us dangerous, inflationaryand would increase further the cost of living for every person in the country.

They want to ban North Sea Oil and Gas which would merely increase our reliance on oil and gas imports from foreign despots and dictators – and put 20,000 UK jobs at risk.

Leading energy experts say that Labour’s plans will lead to ‘tax rises’ and ‘higher bills’ Professor of Energy Policy at Oxford, Dieter Helm, said Labour’s 2030 decarbonisation target would lead to ‘higher costs’, ‘higher energy bills’ and it would cause ‘taxes to go up’. Even the General Secretary of the GMB Union described them as ‘impossible’ and a ‘disaster’ that would lead to ‘economic destruction’.

Working people know how to spend their own money better than any politician or bureaucrat, whether they sit in Barking or Havering Town Hall, City Hall or Westminster.

Mr. Holland seems unaware of Government policy, despite the change to the ban on the sales of new ICE cars, the law that requires all car manufacturers to have 80% of their range to be ‘zero emission’ by 2030 is unchanged. So, walking into any dealers on 1st Jan 2030 80% of the models you can buy will be electric or hydrogen powered, with the 20% being hybrids.

This person not only lives in Bicester, that’s 97 miles away from Dagenham and Rainham, but he was elected as a town councillor there. Presumably, when he stood for election asking the residents of Bicester to trust him and vote for him to serve them, they might have expected that he would honour their trust. Unfortunately for them, it seems he failed to honour his promise to the electors.
Trust should be important in politics, clearly this character doesn’t really think so.

Sam was born in Dagenham, went to school in Rainham, first job was in Rainham tesco and was commanding officer of the Dagenham air cadets.

I think he knows more about this area than some who live here now.

Living somewhere 30 years ago does not mean you know about the needs of its constituents now.

I am afraid you miss the point. He stood for election in Bicester, where he lives, presumably promising electors he would serve them, instead of that he seems to be spending a lot of time driving back and forward on the M40 and M25. It’s about trust, he promised to serve those people in Bicester and simply isn’t honouring that promise and their trust.
