Havering Community Champion Edna Thompson celebrates her 100th Birthday!
St Albans Ward Councillor Judith Holt was delighted to join her former next-door-neighbour on Sunday 3rd September, to help her celebrate a very special birthday, her 100th!

Miss Edna Thompson, who used to live above Councillor Holt in Ferguson Court, Gidea Park, Romford, now lives in the Romford Care Home in Neave Crescent, Harold Hill, where she was visited by Judith on her birthday to give her a card, flowers and sweets, plus sing her HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Miss Thompson has lived an interesting life. Brought up in Hornchurch near Billet Lane, she attended North Street School then Dury Falls School. Her mother died when she was young so she stayed at home to look after her father and brothers rather than continue to further education. She always remembered her 16th birthday as it was the day the Second World War broke out.
She worked for Hornchurch Urban District Council, moving to Romford at Mercury House when the two Councils joined. She volunteered for decades for HOPWA (Hornchurch Old People’s Welfare Association, now Tapestry), often appearing in the local press (below), and helped to set up their centre in Inskip Drive.
Miss Thompson achieved a Mayor of Havering’s Award in 2000 for services to the Elderly in the Community from then-Mayor Councillor Maisie Whitelock and became a Freeman of the City of London in 1985, both of which are up on her bedroom walls. Edna was Chairman of the NALGO Club in Hornchurch and Secretary of the Committee of the local National Trust Group. She enjoyed many holidays to Greece and Italy and continued live independently until well into her nineties.

Edna received a special 100th Birthday Card from The King and Queen, plus other cards, flowers, balloons and a cake from family and friends on her special day.
Councillor Holt told the Havering Daily: “I was so pleased to see Edna again and offer her many congratulations on scoring her century. Happy 100th Birthday, Edna!”
