Performances of the contracted out Urgent Treatment Centres at Queen’s and King George’s Hospital getting worse.
Labour Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Dagenham and Rainham Margaret Mullane today writes in the Havering Daily.
Margaret Mullane has drawn attention to the growing Tory government threats to privatise more parts of the local NHS. In speaking out Margaret pointed to the shocking news that the performance of the contracted out Urgent Treatment Centres at King George and Queens hospitals are getting worse despite already being among the worst in England.
The 95% target for patients to be dealt with within four hours of arrival has been failed at the two local hospitals. In June this happened on only 66% of visits.
Margaret told the Havering Daily:“Local people are paying the price of 13 years of Tory government failure with our health service at King George and Queens hospitals and the desperate lack of local GPs.
I completely agree with Matthew Trainer the Chief Executive of King George and Queens when he criticised the “unusual model” of an organisation outside the NHS managing vital services in the hospitals. The Urgent Treatment Centres are run by Partnership of East London Cooperatives (PELC). The evidence of failure of this privatisation is clear. As well as the Care Quality Commission rating these as inadequate last year, their performance is worsening – in June 2022 81% of patients going into the hospitals were seen and treated within four hours, that dropped to 77% and as at this June it had further declined to 66%.
This is the second worst performance over the 200 Accident and Emergency departments in England.”
Margaret added: “When I met with senior managers at Queens recently their exasperation with the situation was clear. The problems start with the lack of GPs in the community, across Redbridge and Havering on average each GP has 2,074 patients whereas the English average is just 1,700. This directly leads to more people turning up at hospital.
I saw yesterday that the Chief Executive of the French insurance company AXA was interviewed in the FinancialTimes. He stated that he sees ‘quite a few business opportunities’ for AXA to expand its private health care business in the UK. I bet he does, with this Tory government our NHS is up for sale to private businesses who only care about making profits.
My priorities are very different, if I am elected to Parliament I will be supporting Labour’s plan to double the number of medical school places to train the doctors we need and train 10,000 extra nurses and midwives every year.”
Margaret has invited Wes Streeting MP, Labour’s Shadow Health Secretary, to visit Queens Hospital in the Autumn to meet with her and senior staff at the hospital.
