A Havering mother has shared a moving picture of the first pair of trainers owned by her son and the last pair of trainers he owned before being stabbed to death outside his home.

Sue Hedges is an anti knife crime campaigner who runs the Ricky Hayden Memorial in memory of her son who stabbed in 2016 as youths tried to steal his brother’s moped. Ricky was macheted in the leg and spent the last few hours of his life on a life support machine where his family had to make the heartbreaking decision to turn the machine off, as he had lost too much blood.

Now, Sue and her family not only campaign against knife crime, but donate vital life saving Daniel Baird bleed kits to as many venues as they can across London in a bid to save lives.

Sue told the Havering Daily: “Unfortunately that picture is the reality of knife crime. I have lost my son, Ricky is never coming back and now we must stand together as a community to stop others losing their life like my Ricky.

“The Daniel Baird bleed bags are vital life saving tools for our community. We have seen earlier in the year just how important they are and how they can save lives.”

It was Sue’s bleed kit that she had previously donated to a college in Hornchurch, that was used within weeks to save a student’s life.

“We need these kits in as many places as we can as unfortunately knife crime is not going away as no one on our streets is addressing it as it should be. The sentences need to be harsher and the work done to prevent knife crime needs to be tougher.

“The whole community needs to play its part now and address these issues before more children lose their life on our street.”
