Havering Conservatives call for urgent meeting with Havering Mayor on ULEZ and Pay Per Mile.
Havering Conservatives, along with independent Harold Wood Residents’ Association Councillors (non HRA) , have formally demanded the Mayor call an urgent meeting to discuss ULEZ and Pay Per Mile. The demand comes as the ULEZ expansion is imminent, and the judicial review ruling expected in the next two weeks.
Under Havering Council’s rules, an extraordinary meeting can be called if the Mayor agrees or five Councillors sign a requisition. Four Conservatives and three independent Harold Wood Councillors have signed the initial request and the request has the support of the full Havering Conservatives group.
Should the meeting be approved, it would be an opportunity for all Councillors to speak on the topic. The topic of Pay Per Mile road pricing would also be debated, with TFL currently investigating it’s implementation.
Councillor Dilip Patel, Conservatives Deputy Leader said;
“It is urgent that the Mayor agree to this meeting. ULEZ is due to be implemented in just a few weeks and the HRA administration has failed to prepare.
Havering Conservatives believe that the HRA and Labour have taken a purposefully soft approach, and that it may cost taxpayer’s dearly.
The residents deserve a chance to know where everyone stands on the matter.”
Councillor David Taylor, Romford, said;
“We’ve seen the evidence, Labour agreed to support the HRA and the HRA agreed to go soft on Khan. They have let Havering down.
ULEZ is going to be devastating for small businesses, those on low-income and local charities.
Havering Council has failed to prepare and is likely to incur up to £88k a year in ULEZ fines. We will make sure that the HRA don’t make the same mistake twice, and we’ll push them to stand up to Pay-Per Mile”
Councillor Martin Goode, Leader East Havering Resident’s Group said;
“We fully welcome the support of the Havering Conservative Party for joining us on this very important and sensitive matter. We have been trying for some time now, to get the current Leader of the Council, to have an open debate at Full Council, on this subject in order that all members can have their say. The whole subject of introducing a further tax burden on the motorist will only cause financial hardship to many residents and it is very unlikely to improve the current air quality in Havering.”
