Volunteers come together to help restore the Sensory garden to its former glory.
On Sunday 23 July, volunteers came together In what can only be described as a heartwarming display of community support, to repair the damage caused by what is believed to be a group of youths who vandalized parts of the cherished the Sensory Garden in Harrow Lodge. Despite the terrible incidents over the last couple of weeks, the response from the community has been nothing short of inspiring.
Shelley, who manages the garden and represents the Havering Volunteer Centre, was moved by the overwhelming support shown by the volunteers. The garden, a true Havering gem, is lovingly maintained entirely by these dedicated individuals who understand its significance to the community.

The Sensory Garden holds a special place in the hearts of many in Havering. Its purpose is to provide a sensory experience for people with visual impairments, making it a unique and important place for the community. The thoughtful layout of the garden allows visitors to engage with nature through touch, scent, and sound, creating a truly immersive experience.
Upon discovering that damage had been caused by vandals, some Havering Resident’s Association Councillors also helped volunteer yesterday, to restore the garden to its former beauty. Volunteers from all walks of life, alongside councillors and team members, showed up in full force to lend their hands and hearts to the cause.

The work involved clearing up debris, and, most importantly, planting an abundance of new flowers and shrubs, donated by the lovely people at Rainham Allotment. These new additions would not only add to the garden’s vibrancy but also enhance the sensory experience for all visitors, including those with visual impairments.
The act of vandalism was indeed disheartening, but it also brought out the best in the community. People united in their love for the Secret Blind Sensory Garden, determined to protect and preserve this valuable asset for future generations.
The Havering Volunteer Centre, which plays a pivotal role in the garden’s maintenance, deserves a special mention for their commitment. Their dedication to creating a welcoming and inclusive space for everyone to enjoy is truly commendable.
The efforts to restore and enhance the garden not only bring joy to those who visit it but also send a powerful message to those responsible for the vandalism. It shows that the community will not be deterred by such acts but will stand strong, united, and determined to protect the places that matter most.
