Hornchurch residents have questioned why Havering Council have left the war memorial by St Andrew’s church vandalised over a year ago, without any sign of repair.

In May last year, thugs chose to vandalise the memorial by smashing the ledge around it where wreaths are placed, throwing all the Holy Crosses on the floor and leaving the much loved memorial shattered with pieces of concrete everywhere.

Now, a over a year after, and the memorial is still left in a state of disrepair.

Local resident Jeremy spoke to the Havering Daily:

“It has been a long while now and it is very disheartening to see the memorial left in such a bad state. It really is a snub for all those who gave their lives in the war.

“This memorial is packed for Remembrance Sunday and is the focal point of the community, but look at the state it is in. It is appauling to see it left this way.”

The memorial lies outside of St Andrew’s church in the heart of Hornchurch and is a very important part of the borough’s history.

“The church are equally upset at the state our memorial has been left in. We do not understand just why the council have chosen to leave our memorial in this terrible way for over a year.Surely they should have insurance to cover any repairs for the damage done?

“We hope that this Remembrance Sunday-our memorial will be finally repaired. We owe it to all those who gave their life for us.”

A spokesperson from Havering Council told the Havering Daily:
“The Council is working with a contractor to carry out repairs on the war memorial. We are hoping to begin work shortly.”
