Today, Chris Daems from Havering Means Business writes in the Havering Daily.

Being a business owner is an interesting choice. Whilst, when things go well, it can provide you with autonomy and financial freedom when things go well, it also often comes with extra responsibility and more pressure than having a salary. It can also be quite a lonely place to sit with every decision you make good or bad sitting with you. However I personally wouldn’t have it any other way…

I’ve been a Havering based business owner for 12 years, and have gone through the highs and lows of business ownership in this period. Thankfully my financial planning business has built a decent reputation, a portfolio of lovely clients and is growing organically. However I also appreciate the people who have helped me along the way.

In 2020 and 2021, I was conscious of how important it was for Havering based businesses to have an opportunity to network, learn and grow. The chamber of commerce does a decent job, but I felt that there was space for an organisation supporting people like me, who wanted and needed to ensure that I was surrounded by people like me who were trying to build our businesses to help our clients, and do some good in our communities.

We called our support community Havering means business and decided to support in a range of ways. We ran regular events (firstly on ZOOM and then as the world got back to normal, face to face!), we supported our community via educational content, and in 2022 we ran our first expo.

Whilst there was plenty that didn’t go 100% the way we wanted it, we were happy with the day and learned a lot…and the Havering Means business expo is back for 2023 and we intend it to be bigger and better.

This year, we’re hosting the event at the CEME campus and intend to have loads of local businesses exhibiting and hundreds of potential clients and professional connections visiting the stands and we’d love to see you there.

We’re firm believers that businesses might exist to make profit, but they’re also powerful contributors to doing good in the community too. So this year’s theme for the Expo is “Business for good”…so we’d love for you to get in touch if you’re a business having a positive impact in the world. We look forward to either talking to you about exhibiting or seeing you on the day!
