A domestic violence victim who was moved to Havering for safety reasons has made a desperate plea to the council to find her and her son permanent accommodation after four years of living in temporary accommodation.

The single mum who did not wish to be named, fled her home years ago after suffering domestic violence and was placed into Havering where she lived in numerous hotels before finding a temporary one bedroom flat in the borough.

The mum who has a six year old son, is struggling to pay her monthly rent of £1,046 and has been emailing and calling council workers for help.

“I cannot afford the rent here. I have had to give up my job now due to mental health issues after undergoing domestic violence. I suffer with panic attacks and very bad anxiety,” she told the Havering Daily.

“I am a single mum and struggle with the bills on my own. Living in temporary accommodation has left me with depression. I am raising my son in temporary accommodation and it shouldn’t be like that. We both need a permanent place to live for stability.”

The mum has recently had new neighbours move in next her and found a dead mouse in a box in her garden that left her and her son extremely upset.

“We heard the new neighbours arrive late at night and then when we woke up we found a box outside with a dead mouse in it. My son was very distressed and now refuses to go outside without me checking first that nothing unpleasant is there.

“This is not the way I want to raise my child. We are both struggling here and desperately need a permanent home,” she finished.

A spokesperson for Havering Council told the Havering Daily:

“We appreciate fully that this situation is not ideal for her and her son. Her account of her situation makes for very hard reading.

“She was originally placed in the property by Redbridge Council and we have provided support to try and find suitable alternative accommodation. However, the current housing crisis means that demand continues to far outstrip supply.

“We will continue to support her and her son as best we can, which recently included offering to move them into temporary accommodation which was declined..
