Bereaved mum and anti knife crime campaigner Peguy Kato pleads to London communities to unite against knife crime and make their voices heard.

Champion Ghanda’s dream was to be a successful footballer and with the money he earned, return to his home country to build an orphanage. His mother Peguy Kato, left the Democratic Republic of Congo and moved to Havering to build a better life for her and her children. Champion was her eldest son, a young man who looked after his mum and his family, loved his music and loved playing football.

Ten years ago, as he played football with his friends in Newham, he was stabbed to death.Knifed eleven times. Before people make assumptions, he was just a young man out playing football with his friends. Peguy’s world ended that day.

Now, this bereaved mum makes her voice heard against knife crime and has set up a charity named after her son, ‘All Champion’s charity’ in a bid to raise money to build an orphanage in Kinshasa and fulfill her son’s dream.

Peguy told the Havering Daily:

“I wish my son would return, I wish he would have the opportunity to achieve his dream of playing football and then build the orphanage he dearly wanted to help children. My son is never going to come back, I had to sit and watch the moment he died on CCTV in court and come to the brutal realisation that he was gone for good.

“I am urging the community to please come together and make their voices heard against knife crime. Please, make your voices heard now. Do not let knife crime come knocking at your door, it will be too late then. Stand up now whilst you can, as to stand up when you have lost a child, is so hard.”

Peguy, like all bereaved parents is a broken lady whose world has fallen to pieces. She frequently experiences some very dark days, but for the love of her family, she keeps going.

“It is so important that we work together against these horrors on our streets. Knife crime does not discriminate, it impacts everyone. It really is up to us to stand up as a community and speak out. All parents are scared of the horrors of knife crime, but the community sits quietly and watches.

“Please speak out now, help us fight this battle for the love of our children and their future.”

All Champion’s charity is hosting a summer fundraising event on 24 June at Hornchurch Conservative Club to help build Champion’s orphanage and keep Champion’s dream alive.
