Romford Town Centre Policing Teams are highly visible and extremely proactive across the area. Last week, as part of Operation Sceptre, the two teams embarked in a variety of different activities to further clamp down on knife crime

Operation Sceptre is a coordinated week of activity where Police forces across the country raise awareness of knife crime and through information and intelligence, proactively target knife related offences.

On Tuesday 16th May 2023 Romford Town Centre Team B teamed up with Havering Joint Taskforce Team, the local Shopping Centre management teams, dog unit and the local authority for Operation Sceptre day of action. Throughout the shift, they moved about the town and finished off outside the train station.

This operation compliments the work officers carry out on a daily and nightly basis to tackle knife crime and remove dangerous weapons from the streets.

A knife arch was used across the Town Centre to detect and deter the carrying of knives. Plain clothes officers were deployed to identify anyone walking away from the arch.

The day was a success with increased community engagement, three arrests, for a recall to prison, failing to appear at court and possession with intent to supply class B drugs, 23 Stop and searches were conducted and 4 x intelligence report, a crime report and a weapon sweep across the Town Centre.

Inspector Julian Bertie from the Violence Support Unit in the East Area, covering Havering, Barking, Dagenham and Redbridge said: “Whilst the causes of knife crime are complex, early intervention and putting in place measures to tackle the root causes are absolutely essential. With a focus on targeting the route cause of knife crime. Operation Sceptre will highlight ongoing multi-agency arrangements with schools, charities, retailers, the health service and communities to keep people safe from harm. Communities have a vital role to play in tackling violent crime and we urge anyone who may have information to tell us, so that we can tackle violence together”.

If you have any information about knife crime, please contact Crimestoppers – 100% anonymously. It can feel like a hard call, but it could save the life of someone’s son or daughter.
