Happy Birthday Sunita- is currently on at the Queen’s Theatre until Saturday 27 May before it goes on tour.

It is a wonderfully warm, witty performance that highlights the trials and tribulations of an Indian family living in London.

It is a performance definitely worth watching that shows us the challenges that our Indian community face everyday that are not often visible.

The show is based on Sunita’s fortieth birthday and how her family sadly show very little consideration for her.

Every Friday Sunita’s family gather together in the eager hope that the missing husband/father will call from India. Sunita’s brother and sister in law arrive and the mother returns home from work to find that Sunita’s birthday cake was ordered but not collected and the finger pointing is rife. Family disputes continue and the mother makes a phone call to fix the missing cake scenario.

The stage is set around the family’s new kitchen and when a knock on the door arrives…. Maurice the Cockney builder enters bearing a much needed cake for Sunita!

This performance is full of intricate family disputes, arranged marriage issues and has quite a twist at the end!

It is a terrific play with a fantastic ending that has lots of comedy and pathos. It really is worth watching not just on the entertainment scale but also for our own education on other communities.

Tej Pal Sunita’s mother is played by Divya Seth Shah a famous Indian film actress.

Sunita is beautifully played by Bhawna Bhawsar.

Devesh Kishore plays Nav Sunita’s brother.

Skillfully directed by Pravesh Kumar MBE

Beautifully written by Harvey Virdi.
