Havering’s Cabinet Members will consider a proposal at next week’s Cabinet meeting to create village green status for five much-loved green spaces in the borough.

The proposals recommends registering the following sites across the borough:

  • the land at Gooshays, Harold Hill,
  • land at New Zealand Way, Rainham,
  • land at Wennington Green (Wennington Village),
  • land west of Taunton Road, Harold Hill, and
  • Fleet Close Play Site (Upminster)

The Council-owned land, if approved, means the green spaces will remain undeveloped ‘in perpetuity’ and therefore protected for all future generations.

Councillor Gillian Ford, Deputy Leader of Havering Council, said:

“We have listened to residents and, by bringing this Cabinet paper forward, want to protect these treasured green spaces across the borough.

“If approved, they will be protected to be used for recreation, sport and play by the existing community and for all future generations to enjoy.”

Councillor Graham Williamson, Cabinet Lead for Regeneration, said:

“The proposed sites are not included within the Local Plan land supply to provide housing, meaning a decision to seek voluntary registration as village greens would not impact the current local plan housing delivery plan.

“It is also a process that does not fall under Planning. Rather, it is a legal agreement to re-designate the land and, if approved, will add to our collective green space in the borough which would act as a great boost to support the physical health and well-being or our residents and protect beloved public green spaces.”
