Anger over Benhurst Avenue School Street Zone consultation that has been rejected once before.

Residents living near Benhurst Avenue in Elm Park have been presented with a second online consultation asking them if the want a ‘School Street Zone’.

The street zone means that their road, a public highway, will be closed for two hours a day, from Monday to Friday. Residents will be allowed to exit and will be allowed a permit if they have private parking.

One resident who falls under this possible scheme installation and did not want to be named, told the Havering Daily:

“The scheme means cameras will be placed on either side of our road, if you do not have private parking you may well face being ticketed outside your own home. Visitors will struggle to come down our roads.

“Most of the residents who live down the nearby roads are elderly and have family visits or shopping deliveries. With this scheme, it will make it very difficult for them. This is a really Draconian attitude.

“We already have speed humps and a 20 mph area. There has never been an accident along our roads. “

The consultation was run last year and rejected then by local residents. It has now been presented once again online and runs until the 23 April.

“It is like the council are putting us under house arrest. We have already made it clear that we do not want it here. We do not have a traffic problem, there is no reason for the introduction of this scheme on our roads.”

In response, Cabinet Member Councillor Barry Mugglestone told the Havering Daily: “The safety of Children is most important we must agree. We have two consultations going on in Elm Park at present, one around Benhurst School and the other Elm Park Primary. I would encourage all residents to respond, the consultations have been posted on the Hornchurch Residents Association website for information only, it’s to make people aware so we can gauge if these schemes are wanted by the residents.”
