At Yesterday’s (Wednesday 22 March) Full Council meeting at the Town Hall in Romford, a motion was put forward by Labour Councillor and Cabinet Member For the Environment, Councillor Keith Darvill to declare a climate change emergency.

Councillor Darvill said:”The action planned in the UK is not enough to meet climate commitments. The Council’s Climate Change Action Plan sets ambitious targets to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2040, but between flooding and fires, there is a real danger.

“Given the recent reports, science and events in Havering, the Council believes now is the time to declare a climate emergency.”

The motion was carried 42 votes to zero with 5 abstentions.
