Parts of London are a cesspit, we need a tougher approach and a lot more stop and search’-Sicarius MGrath.

‘You are never going to eradicate gangs but you can disrupt their day to day work on our streets,’ tells us Sicarius MGrath. There is very little you can tell Sicarius that he does not know about gangs. Having been an organised crime member for two decades, he knows exactly what is going on.

“London has parts that are a cesspit, controlled by gangs and there is worse to come. There are many gangs working across the capital, many fingers in the pies. We even see advertising cards being dropped through letter boxes selling sexual services and exploiting women.

“A lot of foreign women are being bought in to be exploited. Sadly this will get worse as it is not being tackled as it should be. We need a change of approach.”

Sicarius does not blame the police, but says a tougher approach to tackling gang crime is now urgently neeeded on our streets.

“Most councils are not in control of their streets, what they are doing is moping up the mess rather than tackling the problem. Policing has been reactive rather than proactive. We need stop and search, it 100% works. I know I was stopped and searched at least five times a day. I was a regular gun carrier and that used to stop me carrying. Stop and search is extremely effective as a tool and needs to be used on our streets. We knew that if police were carrying out stop and search in certain areas, we would not be able to carry weapons.

“We need a robust approach, we need to start disrupting their day to day work. Gangs want an easy life, so if you start to disrupt what they are doing and cutting into their resources, then you start to make an impact. Target the sellers and the users, this will soon make a difference.

“It is hard to eradicate all gangs but you certainly can disrupt their everyday life. At the moment, it is way out of control and we can see parts of London that are unusable.”

Sicarius knows that there is not a one fix all solution, but a different series of approaches according to the gangs on the streets,

“The approach must be tougher. You can flood the streets with endless police officers but if their approach is not robust, you are not going to achieve anything. Make policing tougher, use stop and search, get the community onboard. Tell them what you are doing so they can be part of it. It has to be a collective approach.

“Stop and search gives criminals anxiety, so people that say it does not work are wrong, of course it works. It reduced us carrying weapons daily.”

Sicarius has known his far share of trouble carrying firearms, running brothels, arranging kidnappings, he was a gang member for two decades.

He is committed now to helping communities put a stop to gangs by taking a different, tougher approach.

“We must work together to put a stop to the violence on our streets, stop our youth joining gangs, there must be a hardline approach to ultimately save them from this life.”
