Havering residents have taken to social media to complain about a surge of tree cutting taking place across the borough. During tree planting season, locals have instead watched council workers remove trees in Elm Park, Harold Hill and from the Drill roundabout in Hornchurch.

One resident who was angry at the cutting down of all the rees on the roundabout went up to ask council workers if the trees were diseased, but was informed that they were all healthy trees and they did not know why they were being made to cut them down.

The Havering Daily has been informed that they have been removed as they were impacting the sight of moving traffic.

In response a Hornchurch resident told us: “That is utter nonsense, they have been there a long time and I have never had any issues and have not seen endless accidents at that roundabout that would merit chopping down more trees.

“We are being encouraged to plant as many trees as we can and instead we are removing healthy trees that are desperately needed.”

A Havering Council spokesperson told the Havering Daily:

“We removed the trees from the Drill Roundabout for safety reasons because they were affecting the sight of moving traffic and pedestrians at what is a very busy junction.

“One of the trees had been hit and was damaged as a result. To just prune them back would not have resolved the issue and would have led to potential growth issues further down the line.

“We will obviously never remove healthy trees without good reason and we will look to plant new trees in another more suitable area nearby if we can secure the funding.

“We are also considering how we can improve the look of the roundabout in different ways now the trees have gone. “

If there will be no cars on the road due to ULEZ charges, why is there a need for trees who soak up all the bad joojoo
