Shoppers are invited to pet some farm animals as part of the wellness weekender this Saturday and Sunday 11th and 12th of March at The Mercury. Wellgate farm will visit on Sunday and will bring a mix of animals to the centre.

On Saturday the centre is joined by Havering community champions including Dementia Music and Social Club, Brennan and Burch, London Life Savers and Proper Blokes Club and The Mercury Breakfast Club to showcase their community work and to help signpost people to actively look after their wellbeing.

Wellness is an active process of making choices toward a healthy and fulfilling life. Wellness is especially important as we age because regular exercise and proper nutrition can help prevent a variety of ailments including cardiovascular disease, obesity, and fall risk behaviours. Petting an animal can increase levels of the stress-reducing hormone oxytocin and decrease production of the stress hormone cortisol. Reduced stress can also benefit physical health, which is an important part of our overall wellbeing.

On Saturday shoppers will be treated to a seated massage from therapist Mike Kelly, demos of chair yoga with Mary from Body and Soul yoga and shoppers can take part in the Arts Awards ‘Discover’ programme all for free! The weekend is open to everyone and all ages, it’s never too early or too late to look after your wellbeing.

Gemma Brooks, marketing, and tenant liaison at The Mercury, told the Havering Daily: “It’s crucial to be highlighting the importance of health and wellbeing as most people lead busy lives and health is key to our everyday functioning and development. ‘It’s also great as a centre that we can help our customers to make healthier choices and as a health champion myself I understand that sign posting people can help them to understand what’s available to them.”
