Havering Council encourages residents to have their say on borough’s character.

Havering Council is encouraging residents to share their thoughts on the borough in a characterisation study due to start this month (March).

The information residents provide will help us to understand what contributes to the local character of our borough and how we can shape future development to make sure we continue to protect and strengthen our local communities.

The results will contribute to Havering’s Local Plan update, which was adopted in 2021 and  needs updating, as required by the Planning Inspectorate.

The findings will be used to help to identify areas within the borough that require greater protection, in addition to those that may have room for growth. It will set out the description of the physical form of the borough, our history, places, streets and buildings as well as provide an update to our understanding of what makes the borough what it is today. We are keen to hear what characteristics residents wish to preserve or create in their area.

Councillor Ray Morgon, Leader of Havering Council, said:

“This study will deepen our understanding about the local urban environment and help us to maintain the highest of standards of building design and layout, to achieve sustainable development that is right for Havering and our residents.

“I look forward to seeing the results from this study and encourage as many people to contribute to it as possible.”

Allies and Morrison Urban Practitioners have been commissioned to undertake the survey on behalf of the Planning Authority to help to understand the local character and distinctiveness of the neighbourhoods and communities in Havering.

Residents can meet the team and share their views at a series of pop-up events:

Friday 17th March

• Morning 9.30am to 12.30pm at Romford Market
• Afternoon 2pm to 5pm – at Rainham Tesco Extra

Saturday 18th March

• Morning 9.30am to 12.30pm at Harold Hill library
• Afternoon 2pm to 5pm at Hornchurch, outside Sainsbury’s
