The Dagenham and Rainham MP Jon Cruddas has called on the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, to step in and provide support to Havering Council to tackle the ongoing fires at Arnolds Field Launders Lane.

Mr Cruddas told the Havering Daily: “I am pleased that since the change of control at Havering Council there has been a change of attitude on this public health problem. I had been calling for four years for the Council to take action to prevent the ongoing fires across Arnolds Field. There does now seem to be a determination to get to grips with the problem.

“I have written to Sadiq Khan to ask that the GLA offer assistance to Havering Council.”

Margaret Mullane, Labour’s prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Dagenham and Rainham, commented: “The pollution from the underground fires at Arnolds Field is potentially damaging to the health of people across a wide area of Rainham and south Hornchurch. The Mayor of London is rightly concerned about poor air quality in London so I agree that he and the GLA should provide support to Havering to tackle the source of these fires.

“As Jon Cruddas points out in his letter, the London Fire Brigade, for which he has responsibility, has been called out on well over a hundred occasions over the years, and eighty times in one twelve month period to tackle fires on this site. We need concerted action now to protect the health of local residents.”
