Romford Town Centre Councillors call on Council Leader to join forces with five councils taking legal action over ULEZ.
Two Romford Conservative Councillors have joined forces to call on Havering’s Leader of the Council, Councillor Ray Morgon to join the five councils taking legal action against ULEZ.
St Albans ward Councillor Judith Holt and St Edwards ward Councillor David Taylor, are calling on Councillor Ray Morgon to join in the legal action to stop ULEZ coming to Havering in August this year.
Councillor Holt told the Havering Daily:”ULEZ will be a further blow to Romford Town Centre, on top of the new parking charges and plans to sell off car parks in Romford.Plus those on low income will be hit the hardest.
“ULEZ needs to be challenged as much as possible.”
Last week five councils, Surrey, Bromley,Bexley,Harrow and Hillingdon combined to launch a judicial review against Sadiq Khan’s ULEZ expansion.
Residents across Havering have clearly voiced their anger and objections against this scheme.

All councillors, with caveats, have objected to the expansion of ULEZ, so logically the council should join with other councils in sharing the cost of legal action to delay or stop the expansion, otherwise is their professed opposition really sincere?
It may be argued that as a Judicial Review (JR) can only delay, not in itself stop any expansion, it isn’t a prudent use of public money, but remember the Labour Group and D&G MP have only asked for a delay and so a JR would meet this objective! So presumably it isn’t the Labour Group opposing legal action?
The Conservative Group say they want to stop it altogether and so supporting a JR makes sense as delaying things can be an effective tactic in stopping things, as political priorities often change as politicians ‘think again’ rather than lose votes.
Perhaps the explanation lies elsewhere, as at the July 10th 2019 Council meeting the Upminster and Cranham Residents Group submitted a motion calling on Havering Council to declare a “climate emergency” and their rambling ‘end of the world is nigh’ motion was promoted by Cllr Ford, who is now Deputy Leader of the Council!
The Mayor of London says ULEZ is needed to help tackle the “climate emergency” and so presumably Cllr Ford must be supporting the expansion and blocking legal action, or has she changed her mind about the “climate emergency”?
Using taxpayers money for this legal challenge is yet another waste of our money while there are urgent demands on spending elsewhere. There is a Cost of Living Crisis but these councillors want to waste our money on legal challenges. The ULEZ emission standards will be met by ALL vehicles over the coming decades as vehicle technology moves on and petrol / diesel engines are taken off the road for good.
