‘£10 Million worth of ‘Levelling Up’ funding for Dagenham Heathway is a win for local people’.
Young Conservative Member Ben Suter today writes in the Havering Daily.
Last week the Department of Levelling Up, Housing and Communities announced that Barking and Dagenham Council are to receive £10,883,068 worth of ‘Levelling Up’ funding to regenerate Dagenham Heathway. This funding is needed to revive Dagenham Heathway to its former glory. As I spent many years of my life living just up the road from Heathway, I have seen first hand the decline of it. This has been down to a lot of stores closing in Heathway and the rise of online shopping an example of this is the mall. Where you can currently find two uninhabited stores next to Wilko’s one of which was the former Percy Ingle Bakery.
This funding is needed in the regeneration of Heathway to unleash all of its potential. However, the Council must ensure that Heathway, whilst home to many big chains, can also be home to local stores in an aim to rebuild the character of the area. The decline of the Heathway has been sad to watch over many years and the lack of intervention by the Council is appalling. Hopefully now with this funding, from Central Government, the Council can start the regeneration of our once great Heathway and bring it back to its former glory.
This isn’t however being presented in the Council’s proposals where they plan to build an extra 300 homes where Millard Terrace currently stands. This isn’t what locals want or need. Turning Dagenham into a concrete jungle isn’t the answer. The Council should work with local people to make Dagenham as good as it can be. Due to years of Labour neglect this hasn’t happened.
