Anti ULEZ expansion protest held in Trafalgar Square.
On Saturday 28 January an anti ULEZ expansion protest was held in central London. Many came to voice their concerns at the expansion of this scheme across outer London Boroughs starting in August.
Despite endless pleas from both Labour and Conservative Councils and MP’s for the scheme to be delayed due to the cost of living crisis we are in, the fact that most do not comply with the scrappage system and that outer London boroughs do not have the same travel infrastructure that inner London boroughs have, the scheme is still due to commence late summer.
MP’s have called on the scheme to be delayed to allow many to find a way forward to be able to comply with ULEZ.The expansion will impact those struggling the most who will not be able to pay the daily charge of £12.50 or be able to afford a new vehicle and find themselves with life changing situations.
People from all walks of life attended the protest on Saturday. We spoke to a pensioner who said he could not afford a new vehicle, he could just about afford fuel in his car. His pension was £743 a month and he just did not know what to do.
We also spoke to a single mum who brings her two children with disabilities to a day centre twice a week and will now not be able to do this.
This list goes on.
Not one of these people was against tackling the improvement of air quality, they all accepted the fact that air quality is a very important issue.
It is sad to see that there has been very little understanding and compassion for those struggling with life changing decisions. Instead they have been ridiculed, called cranks, white middle classed privileged people intent on causing suffering to the poor and that the whole ULEZ objection is ‘drivel’.
