In response to the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan’s tube and bus fare increase announcement, Labour’s London Assembly Transport spokesperson, Elly Baker AM, said:

“Our transport network is at the heart of everyday London. We campaigned to save our buses so that all Londoners can have access to affordable transport – it is crucial these services are protected.

“Due to the government’s funding conditions for TfL, following years of chronic underfunding of transport, and public services, the Mayor faces an impossible choice.

“With Londoners struggling to make ends meet, inflation sky high and the cost of living crisis biting into bank accounts, it is hard to see fares rise.

“As passenger numbers continue to recover post-pandemic, I am concerned that higher fares could see fewer people returning to public transport.

“At this tough time the government should be working with City Hall and doing all it can to ensure TfL can deliver the affordable, efficient and reliable service Londoners need.”
