Council Leader steps in to see how the situation can be resolved.

An Accident and Emergency nurse working long hours at Queen’s Hospital in Romford returned to her car after a 13 hour shift, to find that she had been issued her third parking ticket in a week.

Nurses are paying £60 a month to park in the multi storey car park next to the hospital but sadly, most days the car park is full so staff have to use the nearby Oldchurch Rise car park that is council owned.

This car park only allows parking for 12 hours, so nurses working 13 hour shifts have to leave the hospital , walk in the dark to the car park to place another ticket on their vehicle. They are paying £25 a day to park there and despite getting valid tickets, many are still returning to find they have been issued parking fines.

Lee from Harold Wood, whose wife is a nurse at Queen’s Hospital told the Havering Daily: “Nurses are working really long hours and are struggling to park their cars. My wife received her third parking fine this week, despite having a valid ticket on her car. It really is disgusting.

“They struggle to park, many are walking in the dark to car parks far from the hospital late at night before they get to work.

“The car park at Oldchurch Rise only allows parking for 12 hours, so nurses are having to leave their job and walk out to place a second ticket on their car and paying £25 a day just to park. Despite getting tickets, many are still getting parking fines.”

Our nurses are working incredibly long hours, under huge pressures, many are burnout and struggling to deal with the high levels of patients at the hospital and to return to their car after a long shift and find a parking ticket is completely unacceptable.

Lee continued: “My wife like most nurses, is under constant pressure and their work load really is unbearable. She had finished a 13 hour shift and it had been a really difficult one that had left her upset. All she needed was to return to her car and find that she had received her third parking ticket in the space of a week. It is beyond belief.”

The Havering Daily contacted Havering’s Leader of the Council, Councillor Ray Morgon to inform him of this horrendous situation. Councillor Morgon told the Havering Daily: “We appreciate all the incredible work our nurses are doing and we will act on this straight away. We will carry out a review and see how we can resolve this situation for our nurses.

“We will work with officers and have a look at Oldchurch Rise car park to see how we can help going forward and support our nurses.”
