Jon Cruddas the Dagenham and Rainham MP has responded to reports that waiting times in the area’s hospitals’ A&E departments are one of the worst in England.

Jon told the Havering Daily: “ An absolute priority for government must be to safeguard the health of people and at times when we need emergency care our NHS has to be there for us all. The report that performance at A&E departments at King George and Queens is amongst the very worst in England is an indictment of 12 years of Tory government.

Waits of over 4 hours are simply unacceptable and are now becoming the norm. Indeed, I have received contacts from constituents of horrendous waits at Queens. “

Margaret Mullane, Labour’s Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Dagenham and Rainham, commented: “ The government try to excuse their failures on health care by saying that the record backlogs and A&E waits are due to the Covid pandemic. The truth is the Tories have had approaching 13 years in power and well before the pandemic performance was worsening.

Nurses, doctors and ambulance staff are on their knees due to pressure and staffing shortages. Ambulances are left parked outside hospitals with patients inside because A&E departments are crammed and cannot accept patients in need of treatment.

I was contacted two weeks ago by a local resident whose mum had to wait 33 hours in A&E at Queens before she was admitted to a ward. The woman was placed on a chair for the first 20 hours then was moved to a trolley in a corridor for the next 13 hours.

This Tory government has presided over the effective collapse of the NHS and the care system. I will be working for a Labour government that will value health service and care staff and invest in the NHS to make sure we can have a service to be proud of and can safely rely on”.
