Havering bin gate drama continues.
The bin gate drama across Havering continues with news that the council have signed a new eight year waste collection contract- which isn’t ‘new news’ states Councillor Gillian Ford.
The Havering Daily reported last week that a new contract had been signed on a ‘like to like basis.’ Now Councillor David Taylor has welcomed the news that Havering Council has agreed to sign a new 8-year waste collection contract, which includes weekly collections.
Calling the contract a “victory for Havering”, Councillor Taylor says the fight isn’t over yet.
“Just two weeks ago, Labour and the HRA voted against my motion. I asked them to commit to weekly bin collections and over 2,000 residents signed my petition calling for the same.
“This evening (14th December) the Cabinet have voted to sign a new contract, with weekly collections. This is a victory for Havering, but the fight isn’t over yet”.
Havering Council is continuing with its budget consultation which includes a proposal for fortnightly collections, presented as a budget saving. Councillor Taylor argues that the saving won’t be seen for 12 years and is now calling on the council to retract that proposal.
“As long as the proposal is still in the consultation, it could still happen. Though, it would be very unprofessional of the council to go back on the agreed new contract.
“I think it only right that residents of Havering are now given reassurance that their bin collection will now remain weekly”.
In response, Deputy Leader of Havering Council, Councillor Gillian Ford stated: “Just to confirm last night’s decision is not new news. This has been accessible to Councillors as part of the forward plan since May. Perhaps you should have provided the facts to the residents Councillor Taylor.”
