Following our article asking the important question ‘is our policing system broken’, the Havering Daily has received many comments and emails from residents eager to show their support for our frontline officers.

On Monday we reported how officers across the Met struggled to cover all of our communities due to the vital fact that there simply are not enough police officers. Since then, we have received a flurry of messages from readers keen to show their support for our officers and to simply to state ‘They really do a great job and have such a hard time with everything going on.’

The pressure faced by police officers as we have stated is indescribable, the work they do daily in our communities is vital and the community are now keen to show their appreciation.

“I have read how so many are now suffering from PTSD and that is really sad to hear. Police officers are damned if they do and damned if they don’t. It really is awful how they are treated on our streets. My Safer Neighbourhood officers are always really friendly and chat with me when I see them. They should be treated with a lot more respect,” said Sita.

Our article highlighted the endless difficulties frontline officers face working everyday across London after years of brutal cuts to the force.

“Years of austerity is now showing the impacts across our services and the police is one of the many victims alongside our health facilities,” said Tom who works in the public sector. “I know people moan about lack of police, but we know they are not to blame. There have been so many cuts to services that are so vital for our communities such as youth clubs and mental heath centres. The pressure is now on the police to deal with mental health issues which clearly is not their job.”

“I had anti social behaviour issues in my block of flats, when the police did arrive, they were really kind and supportive. They have since been back to see how I am and if the situation is improving. Actually I know what people say about the police today, but this wasn’t the case. They were great,” said Elaine a nursery nurse.

The public want to see the police on our streets and support them despite the difficult times they face. People are fed up of knife crime, fed up of watching young men wickedly lose their life on our street. The community knows it is time to back our bobbies and help them get the streets back and support our youngsters out of a life of crime.

So many police youth engagement officers work so hard with young people right across the capital in a bid to keep them away from a life of violence.

For all our officers going to work today, the public thank you for doing your job day in and day out despite the awful conditions you face, please know, most really do appreciate what you do, as do we at the Havering Daily.
