Memorial stone unveiled at RAF Heritage Centre in Hornchurch.

On Saturday October 1, residents were invited to to the unveiling of a memorial stone at the RAF Heritage Centre, Suttons Lane.

Originally the unveiling was scheduled to be part of a weekend (18-19 September) commemorating the Battle of Britain. However, this was cancelled due to the death of HM Queen Elizabeth II.

Elm Park Councillors Stephanie Nunn, Barry Mugglestone and Julie Wilkes attended the unveiling ceremony.

Councillor Nunn told the Havering Daily: “We were very pleased to attend the unveiling of the memorial stone on Saturday.The memorial which was unveiled by the Hornchurch Aerodrome Historical Trust (Tony Philpott) and Airfields of Britain Conservation Trust (Kenneth Bannerman).

“Mr Bannerman said he travelled all over the world with the Trust and there is no doubt that Hornchurch Airfield is one of the most important in the world.”

Visitors to the RAF Heritage Centre had the opportunity to see the American room, classic cars, sales tables raising money for the centre and see the monument unveiled.
