Defund the police-but surely this has already been achieved and the votes clearly show the results.

At a recent protest outside of New Scotland Yard, former Labour Party Leader Jeremy Corbyn was seen adding his vocal and physical presence to those calling to defund the police. What is really quite ironic is that this has already been undertaken by his party’s opposition and if these are his beliefs, surely he should join his rival party that have very proudly achieved what he is still campaigning for.

Mr Corbyn was spotted with his fists in the air campaigning next to an individual wearing her ‘defund the police’ t-shirt at protest over the recent death of Chris Kaba. But Mr Corbyn, you are calling for something that Mrs May so successfully achieved back in 2015 with flying colours.

Police numbers under Teresa May’s watch as home secretary were brutally axed, with officer numbers falling sharply across London, and the trend continuing right throughout her role as party leader.

Numbers went on to plummet across the country from 144,353 in 2009 to 122,859 in 2016. Now, here we are in 2022 and the results of these cuts are screaming in our faces, something police officers have warned us would happen a long time ago as they watched the decimation of their police force and the loss of experienced colleagues that were so vital in policing.

So, let us look at the defund the police brigade supporting Mr Corbyn and Mr Corbyn supporting them. Surely you should be wearing a blue tshirt instead of a red one as this work has already been done for you.

Now, under new leadership and the public outcry at the shortage of police officers on our streets, the number has risen, but at what impact?

Leaders across the country call for police officer’s presence on our streets and to do their job. Police officers want to do their job but face endless obstacles in doing them.

Here in London, the Met police when allowed to do their role, do amazing work in our communities. Officers work long hours and engage with the community brilliantly and are very much supported and wanted by the majority of the public.

If you carry on with the defund the police narrative, what do you achieve?

Who will be first on scene to provide life saving first aid to victims of knife crime? Who will be called to help a mental health sufferer who has no one else to turn to? Who will arrive at a horrific scene of a road traffic collision? Who will stop a potential terrorist attack across our capital? Who will visit a pensioner struggling on her own with no other visitors? The list of who’s goes on and on.

The closure of so many of our vital services across London such as provisions for our youth has caused a huge impact on our society, as have the cuts to mental health services that are on their knees.

Anyone who works with the community can see that further defunding of our police forces with the way things stand, would be a complete and utter disaster. Surely Mr Corbyn this is something you are clearly able to witness for yourself.

Perhaps you can look at the incredible work these officers do daily on our streets and and start a new trend of actually supporting police officers.
