Romford residents have overwhelmingly backed Liz Truss to be the next PM, in a poll carried out by local councillor David Taylor. Truss secured 63.4% of the Romford vote.

Rocked by scandals and his handling of sexual abuse allegations, Boris Johnson resigned as Prime Minister on 7th July, triggering a leadership election that saw Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak reach the final two. Both candidates have since been campaigning across the country, With Liz Truss visiting Romford early in the campaign.

As a member of the Conservative Party, Councillor Taylor is one of just 180,000 people who will get to decide the next PM. He gave his vote to Romford residents.

“I promised to give my residents a greater voice and I can think of few votes as being as important as picking our next PM. I asked local residents to decide who I should vote for”.

“The result is clear”, Cllr Taylor said, “Romford backs Liz Truss”.

Councillor Taylor did not require those voting to be members of the Conservative party and he says he knows that even local Labour activists have taken part in the poll.

“We need to rediscover consensus politics in this country. Us and them politics is dull and unproductive. If I’m only listening to those who voted for me, or back my party, then I won’t be respecting the role of a councillor”.

The results of the leadership election are likely to be announced on 5th September, following which the winner will announce their cabinet. July 6th 2022 saw the largest resignation of government minsters in modern history. Mr Taylor says this new cabinet must work hard to regain the public’s trust.

“60 ministers, trade envoys and other senior MPs resigned”, Taylor said. “The Conservative party is being rocked by scandal after scandal and we will lose the next general election if we don’t sort things out. I hope that our next party leader, and PM, will get a grip on the party.

These scandals are a distraction from the real problems. People are facing life-changing energy bills, homelessness is predicted to rocket, wages are not keeping up with inflation, unions are holding the country to ransom.

Romford has backed Liz Truss to fix these problems. We’ll all be watching closely and hoping she succeeds”.
