Councillor Gerry O’ Sullivan from St Andrew’s ward has thanked the local Hornchurch businesses for coming together to help residents who were displaced by the flat fire on Mavis Grove in the early hours of this morning.

The fire broke out just before 1am and sixty residents were evacuated by police officers, two of whom were taken to hospital for smoke inhalation.

As a result of the fire, a large part of the roof has now been destroyed and many residents have found themselves with nowhere to go.

Councillor O’Sullivan and Havering Council officers were at the scene to help the many in need.

Councillor O’Sullivan told the Havering Daily: “The residents stayed at Hornchurch police station as they had nowhere else to go last night.

“This morning thanks to Christine from The Cranleigh, the residents have gone there and have been given free tea and coffee and free lunches.

“The local businesses here have been fantastic. Helen from La Moulin and Robbie from Best Sellers have all been providing residents and emergency service members with plenty of water, tea and coffee. It’s great to see how the community pulls together during times of need.

“Thank you to our local businesses who are always there to support the community and thank you to our firefighters and police officers for all their hard work during these difficult times.”
