The Last Resort-animals fight to save their trees from property developers.
At the Havering Daily we like to put the community stories at the heart of the paper. On Sunday we were able to witness an incredible performance at The Queen’s Theatre in Hornchurch by the Habbit Factory. This group was put together some years ago as an inclusive organisation for children and young people with disabilities in the Borough.
On Saturday and Sunday last week they put together a show which they had devised themselves – the story of a ruthless property developer who wanted to knock down a Holiday Lodge centred in a forest, chop down the forest and build a large shopping centre. Something that sadly we are all to familiar with.
However, what he doesn’t reckon with is the opposition of his children and the feelings of the woodland animals. The central character is Buddy the Badger, whose mother is killed by the developers car. Buddy finds out what is proposed to be done to the forest and goes on a journey to enlist the help of all the animals and insects within the woodland.
The journey is quite incredible and fantastical with all the animals coming together and setting aside their differences for the sake of their habitats.Meanwhile the developers children revolt against their father and intended step mother and try to make him see sense.
We did, I am glad to say have a happy ending, with the developer abandoning his plans and leaving the animals their woodland.
Well, simply put, that was the story. However the quality of the acting, dancing and singing was quite superb and the vitality was amazing. Credit must go to all the children, many who had to overcome problems just to get onto the stage and they did themselves amazingly proud.
So much work went into this project and production – the volunteers, the carers and Lee Giles must all take a slice of the credit for this fabulous evening.
Havering’s Mayor Councillor Trevor McKeever was at the event to add his support to this fantastic charity and told the Havering Daily: “It was a privilege to be invited to the Habbit Factory’s productions of The Last Resort, a production with so much joy and relevance to how we live today. The Habbit Factory is an inclusive arts organisation working with children and young adults and people with disabilities.
“The show was performed with precision, with a few ad-libs which made the evening more poignant.
Congratulations to all involved and thank you for making me so welcome.”
