EXCLUSIVE: Clarion Housing attacked by cyber security incident leaving hundreds unable to pay rent or contact them.

Four weeks ago Clarion Housing, one of the largest housing associations in Europe suffered a cyber security incident which has left hundreds of residents unable to pay their rent, contact them for repairs and even fearful that their bank details might have been compromised in this attack.

Clarion sent out an email informing its members that they had suffered a ‘cyber security incident’ which is impacting their IT systems, emails and phone lines. The email stated that the company were working ‘urgently’ to restore their systems as soon as they could. That was four weeks ago and no communication has been received since leaving hundreds unable to pay rent, contact them by phone or email and extremely worried that their personal details have now been compromised in this cyber attack.

Daniel Beal who lives on Orchard Village that comes under Clarion Housing and is an It Engineer told the Havering Daily:

“We received the email from Clarion four weeks ago letting us know about the cyber attack and now nothing since. People have been left for four weeks in total darkness about what is happening, we are unable to contact them by phone or email and many do not know how to pay rent.

“I have been helping and advising people what to do next as many fear that their bank details stored on Clarion’s IT systems have now been compromised. It has been awful. It really is standard practice that people should be notified about what is happening, yet four weeks and we have heard nothing. Surely their IT systems would have had a server back up, you would expect a company of this magnitude to have state of the art technology and yet they clearly do not.”

Daniel has been supporting endless residents across the area who have found themselves with worries over rent paying, unable to contact Clarion for repairs and scared that their personal details may have now put in jeopardy.

“There are many people who struggle to pay rent and now they have no way of contacting Clarion. I am advising people to not pay online as they normally would do, but through the All Pay app and to make sure they change all their log in details.”

A meeting is taking place tonight by the ‘Social Housing Action Group’ (SHAC) to talk about the horrendous Clarion situation where Daniel will be talking and advising residents further. More information on this can be found on the Clarion Housing Residential Group on Facebook.

This security breach comes as the Housing Ombudsman plans a systemic investigation into record keeping. It stated yesterday-“Poor record keeping features among the latest decisions published by the Housing Ombudsman.”
