VIDEO: A silent walk for Zara to bring her home.
On Saturday July 2 a silent walk took place on Cranbrook Road in Ilford in memory of 35 year old Zara Aleena who was murdered last Sunday morning as she walked home.
The special memorial was organised by Zara’s family where mourners were asked to walk the final ten minutes to Zara’s house, to bring ‘Zara home’.
Hundreds of men and women came out to pay their respects to Zara and show solidarity and once again oppose violence against women and girls. The crowds came dressed in white as had been requested by the family and held placards with Zara’s face as they walked silently to her home, the last ten minutes that Zara never got to make.
Relative Farah Nez addressed the crowds and thanked them for taking part in the walk.
As they reached the final destination, Ms Nez said:
“She was on the home stretch, thank you so much for doing the walk and holding her in your hearts, praying for her and keeping her safe on this journey.”
The walk was a very sombre one as people walked together linking arms, holding flowers and placards in Zara’s memory.
Members of the Million Women Rise group were also present to show solidarity and stand united against violence against women and girls.
