Litter blights our streets, parks and beaches and costs us millions of pounds to clear up every year. Keep Britain Tidy aim to inspire people to eliminate litter by educating future generations to keep our country clean.
This is about more than simply getting people to pick up litter. They aim to change behaviour permanently by spotlighting the problem daily and offering creative solutions.
Keep Britain Tidy work with people, businesses, local authorities and government to educate, innovate and inspire – improving the environment on everyone’s doorstep.
This month, the Havering Daily will align its Pick A Street event with the Great British Spring Clean event and we encourage you all to take part when you can.
The event runs from 28 May to 13 June 2021 and people are asked to pledge to pick through the Keep Britain Tidy website: https://www.keepbritaintidy.org/get-involved/support-our-campaigns/great-british-spring-clean/pledge-to-pick
You can now let them know how many minutes and hours of litter picking you will pledge during the Great British Spring Clean by:
- Pledging as an individual. You can pledge up to 24 hours of litter-picking at a time. If you do more than this, please make additional pledges
- Pledge as a group. Under current guidance, this is either with one other person, your bubble or as a school. Please ensure you are sticking to the lockdown rules.
Keep Britain Tidy will then convert those minutes to miles with the hope that, come summer, we can all enjoy a cleaner, greener, litter-free environment.
Please share your wonderful photos and videos with Keep Britain Tidy on social media. Just tag @keepbritaintidy and use the hashtags #GBSpringClean #PickAStreet #MillionMileMission
Plus, if you aren’t already signed up to the Litter Heroes Facebook Group, get on over and join our active community of volunteers driving the litter-picking movement across the country!
Havering Council’s Street Cleansing team will be working with us to collect any litter filled bags over the event. If many bags of litter are picked, residents can arrange for the bags to be collected via the ‘Love Clean Streets‘ app.
If you manage to only fill a few bags, we ask that you take these home so they can be put out with your rubbish on your waste collection day. This will help reduce the pressure on the Street Cleansing team and we recommend this whether ever possible.
For more than a few bags, please leave them safely in any of the below areas and immediately report them via the ‘Love Clean Streets‘ app.
Residential streets – at the end of the roads or next to council bins
Main roads – bus stops, laybys or council bins
Carriageways – bus stops or laybys
Parks – by parks bins
If you do not own any litter picking equipment, you can either purchase your own or email the Street Cleansing team to loan some (firstname.lastname@example.org).
This is a community event for everyone to join in, you are all welcome, whether you are an experienced picker armed with your litter pick or just keen to help keep our borough tidy.
