Shoppers have egg-ceeded expectations as many donated chocolate eggs as part of the shopping centre’s yearly Easter egg appeal. The appeal sees that the isolated elderly community in and around Havering are not forgotten and also benefit from tasty and fun treats over the Easter weekend.

The centre usually has a packed schedule of events especially around Easter but of course these are put on hold during these challenging times. Over the past few weeks, The Mercury has been asking people to buy an extra chocolate egg when essential shopping and donate it by dropping it into the giant Egg Pod outside Asda.

More than 250 chocolate eggs & gifts were donated from shoppers and retailers including Wilko, Asda, Axis CSS, Barclays Bank and Mecca Bingo and staff from theshopping centre donated them to over 300 residents atRavenscourt Nursing Home, Hornchurch, Emerson Court residential home, Hornchurch, Barleycroft Care Home, Romford and Portland Close Sheltered Housing, Romford.

Centre manager Spencer Hawken said: “We are always amazed just how generous people can be even more so during these testing times.

“The appeal has been running since 2005 and the number of eggs donated continues to rise, thanks to the generoussupport of shoppers, local businesses and The Mercury’sretailers.

“Egg giving is synonymous with Easter and Easter eggs are enjoyed by all ages – not just the young but the young at heart too.”
